Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning

Encouragement is given through reading a range of books, picking out and defining new vocabulary as they come across it. In school children are given opportunities to play word games which encourage synonyms and antonyms of words, look at anagrams or pick out an odd word from a list of words. Teachers systematically teach tricky spellings. Parents are encouraged to support learning by broadening their child’s general knowledge in any way possible!

By systematic teaching of number bonds and times tables on a regular basis children develop quickly in non-verbal reasoning skills. Number games are given to play at home as well as in school. Children are encouraged to practise with shape patterns such as tangrams, symmetry and jigsaws.

In prep our planning for secondary school includes specialist teaching to fine tune these skills and practise tests for entrance exams.
